Efficiency of Postural Rehabilitation Exercises for Chronic Low Back Pain

The Study Conducted  By Researchers

In the December 2018 issue of the Journal of Pain Research, researchers shared their study regarding the effectiveness of postural rehabilitation exercises for chronic low back pain. They reviewed 26 published studies on the use of the exercises for chronic low back pain. The types of rehabilitative exercises that were part of the study include Pilates, McKenzie exercises for low back pain, Feldenkrais method of exercise therapy, Global Posture Rehabilitation, and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.

The researchers looked at each of the qualifying studies to examine the effectiveness of exercise therapy for low back pain. They looked to see the changes that it made in pain, disability, qualify of life, and psychological aspects. They also reviewed the physical changes, including that of muscle strength, mobility, flexibility, and muscular activity. What they found was that each of these different types of rehabilitation exercises was effective in reducing pain and disability, and improving quality of life. They also found that the benefits of the rehabilitative exercises were maintained at follow up visits. 

Important to note from their research findings is that they found that Pilates, Back School, McKenzie, and Feldenkrais all reduced pain with none being superior to another. They also report that the exercises were more efficient than a pharmacological or instrumental approach in reducing disability, as well as when it came to improving all psychological aspects.

This study is great news for those who suffer from low back pain. For those who suffer from chronic low back pain, they may find some relief by engaging in specific rehabilitation exercises. Regardless of the type of program tried, there is a good chance the effort will bring some benefits. These postural exercises are another tool that those with chronic low back pain can use to help improve their condition.
